Myanmar celebrates the Grand Prize laureate
On August 9th, a Notification Ceremony was held to announce Dr. Thant Myint-U as this year's Grand Prize laureate at Park Royal Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar. The ceremony attracted more than 140 guests and media to celebrate Dr. Thant-Myint-U's success.
Dr. Thant Myint-U is not only a prominent historian but is also dedicated to peace-building activities making the most of his experience in the United Nations, and preservations of historical artifacts.
Born as a grandson of former UN Secretary-General, U Thant, and educated in the states, his engagements are borderless serving as a member of the advisory council for President U Thein Sein and accompanying US President Obama during his visit to Myanmar.
The ceremony took place in the presence of many senior dignitaries in Myanmar, including U Soe Thane, Union Minister of President Office, and U Hla Myint, Mayor of Yangon City. Also present were Mr. Ichiro Maruyama, Minister-Counselor of the Embassy of Japan to Myanmar, and Mr. Keiichiro Nakazawa, Chief Representative of JICA Myanmar Office, representing the guests of honor from Japan.

Welcoming Dr. Thant Myint-U in Fukuoka, a public lecture entitled "Where is Myanmar advancing toward in the 21st century?: Dialogue on the country's past, present and future" will hold on September 19th. He will also speak with Mr. Yasushi Akashi, former Under-Secretary-General of the UN, at the special dialogue following the lecture.
