Arts and Culture Prize 2019 laureate, Mr. SATO Makoto visited Fukuoka Girl’s High School in the West Ward of Fukuoka City.
“Cherish those times when you feel that something is weird or strange. Do not disregard those feelings. Don’t believe in tomorrow; believe in the day after tomorrow.”
Based on the topic of meeting people, Mr. Sato sprinkled in some humor as he talked about his personal experiences, including things schools don’t teach students and backstage anecdotes. The principal opened the visit by telling the students, “Please be graceful for this invaluable opportunity” and they listened intently to the lecture about the unknown world of theater. Some of the students eagerly took notes as they tried to absorb knowledge from Mr. Sato, who mentioned that high school was a very important time in his life appeared to connect directly with their own concerns and thoughts. Mr. Sato recounted that the books, towns, and people that he encountered when he was in high school helped make him who he is today.
In the question-and-answer session, a student asked for advice on becoming self-suffcient even aboard. Sato said, “There are no major barriers between yourself and the outside world, so you should go see it with your own eyes.” He finished the visit with some words of encouragement, “Cherish those times when you feel that something is weird or strange. Do not disregard those feelings. Don’t believe in tomorrow; believe in the day after tomorrow.”
