Mr. Palagummi Sainath is a passionate journalist who reports 'rural stories' by photographing and listening to the people in impoverished villages in India which goes through turbulent changes. Based in the NGO ‘People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI)’he develops the digital journalism to document people’s memories and experiences with his young co-journalists. During the repeated lockdowns of society since last year, they have been continuing to provide the valued and grassroots information. Mr. Sainath will speak about the activities of ‘People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI)' which is made out of people’s experiences transformed into words to be handed down through future generations.

Prof. Kishimoto will cast light on the ‘Late Ming and Early Qing’ period in China when the trade boom caused drastic social changes with the collapse of the traditional order. She will speak about the global context of what was happening in Japan and Europe in the same period of history as well as showing people’s life under the mixture of hope and fear.

■The screening of ‘Last Life in the Universe’

The film script by Mr.Prabda. Based on the Thai resort, a quiet love story of two people who have different nationalities, met each other through the deaths of own siblings. The film stars Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano who received the Upstream Prize for Best Actor at the 2003 Venice Film Festival for this role.

Mr. Prabda has been contributing to update the understanding of Japanese culture in Thailand by writing essays about Japan and a script of a film with a Japanese character as the leading role. Followed by Mr. Prabda’s Keynote speech on the COVID-19 calamity and Japanese culture, there will be an interview with Professor Kubota Yuko (University of Teacher Education Fukuoka), who studies the representation of the Thai cultures in Japanese literature, to discuss together on the intersection of gaze of two countries.

Being praised as a writer of the new generations in Thai literature, Mr. Prabda has continued writing through the global point of view. While his works show the humorous and honest sides of humanity, they are also full of criticism and deep thoughts on the modern culture and society. In this seminar we will discuss how literature in Asia will cross its pass with the rest of the world and Japan through his literature considered as ‘very Thai’ and contemporary at the same time.
